Verdant Associates and Grounded Research and Consulting collaborated on a research initiative exploring Heat Mitigation opportunities for the Bay Area Regional Energy Network (BayREN – an organization made up of the nine counties in the San Francisco Bay Area). The primary objective was to aide BayREN in deciding whether to develop and implement a pilot program to enhance the heat mitigation capabilities within existing energy efficiency programs. Much of the San Francisco Bay Area building stock was constructed for milder climates that do not require cooling. Building codes and building construction will be critical in the future to protecting occupants from increases in extreme temperatures due to climate change.
